First Time to Easter Orienteering Carnival

This page is designed to give information for those who have not been to an Easter Orienteering Carnival before.

If you have questions that are not answered on this page, please contact us from the "Contact Us" page.

If you are entering the Easter 3 Days for the first time the following information may assist you.

The Easter 3 Days is a fun event for first-timers to experience a multi-day National Carnival. The Carnival runs from Good Friday to the following Sunday - incorporating 10 Events.

Prologue or Family Team Relay (Events 1 & 2 - Friday 6 April)

Held on Good Friday, the prologue is a sprint race for which there are two courses set. One for the elite men and the other for the elite women. The elite races start and finish before the public race starts in order to provide a better atmosphere for the elite race. Generally the course lengths are between 2.2 and 2.8km. A shorter easy navigation course is added to make up the three courses required for a family relay team. Those who are not part of a family team can enter the course of their choosing in the Public Prologue. Just think, you may find yourself running one of the legs faster than some of the elites. What a great boost to your ego. Remember, it is about solving the problems rather than how fast you can run.

Australian Three Days (Events 3, 4, 5 - Saturday 7 April to Sunday 9 April)

The main event involves 3 days of orienteering on a range of different maps. Your result is the cumulative time over these three days of competition with awards being presented at the conclusion of the final day. There will be time each day to do some sight seeing in the Granite Belt region, renowned for its wines and National Parks. The family relays and two of the three days will be run on maps close to Stanthorpe. One day will involve 80 minutes of travel to a map West of Warwick.

Return to The Cascades (Event 6 - Wednesday 11 April)

There are many Australian orienteers who rank The Cascades terrain as some of the best in the country. First used in 2000 for the Asia-Pacific Championships, the fastest km rate was 7 minutes 20 seconds per km. This time indicates the sheer navigational challenge of the terrain.

This event is close to Stanthorpe, and it will be conducted by the local orienteering club, the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders.

Thursday Club mid-week Event  (Event 7 - A chase around the Paddock - Hardings Paddock - Thursday 12 April)

From 1980 the Army conducted a mid-week competition in the Brisbane region, consisting of two courses to which members of the public were welcome to attend. When the old soldiers stopped putting out the controls, a group of orienteering retirees continued to conduct the events, which are now held under the auspices of Orienteering Queensland. This will be a low-key event where there is absolutely no pressure to perform. A bar-b-que is included in the cost of entry.

                              Two Sprints in Brisbane (Events 8 & 9 - Saturday 14 April)

The two sprints in Brisbane on the Saturday after Easter will be conducted on more traditional sprint maps of colleges and universities. Two in one day with lots of time for latte in between.

Long DIstance Race (Event 10 - Sunday 15 April)

This is a "Badge Event". A race of "badge" standard indicates that the courses offered and the conduct of the event is of National Standard. The venue is with 50km of the Brisbane CBD.

                              FAQ's

                              How do I enter?

Online entry via this website will open on 1 January 2012. Full costs and entry details will be available then.

Do I need to be a member of a orienteering club to enter?

No. Any person can enter any of the events being offered. It is not even necessary to enter all of the days of the Easter 3 Days.

                              Which class should I choose?

Competitors range in age from under 10 to over 85. The class structure is based on age and gender in five-year age groups from 35 years and up and two-year age groups from 10 to 20 years. There is also a shorter hard navigation course (AS) for your age group, as well as a moderate navigation course (B). If you were turning 63 this year you would enter the 60 age group. If you are 13 this year you would enter 14. Everyone can enter a harder age class. Women can also enter mens classes if they so wish. The full list of classes and approximate course lengths will be posted by 1 January 2012 with the full entry information. If you are still not sure what to do please contact one of the contacts Eric Andrews or Liz Bourne on 07-46836374, or email: batmaps@halenet.com.au.
