Sledge Day 1 ReportThe Australian 3 Days is one of the highlights of the orienteering calendar. Many spend months and months training hard, conditioning themselves both mentally and physically, however, not those who run sledge! In the past few years sledge has sort of dropped off the radar, but this year the spark has been reignited by a passionate bunch of Queenslanders.
This year's field is made up of 23 unprepared, fairly unfit but highly competitive runners from all across Australia. Armed in costume Day 1 saw 3 powerrangers, a ninja, wheres wally and 3 forest fairies battling it out for the ultimate sledge boxer shorts. Justin Woolford took out day 1 by a comfortable margin, however, he has been accused of training! The black powerranger (Kieran Sullivan) was 5min behind Justin, with Bruce Paterson sitting in third. The finish split (green boxers) showcased some of the competiveness within the group with Simon Mee even putting on a show as a warmup for his sprint down the finish. The sledgers will battle it out again tomorrow with the course set to again show off their skills in a race for the ultimate prize. The winners of Day 1 of the ultimate prize in sledge, the Boxer Shorts!! Justin Woolford – Overall leader Bruce Paterson – Fastest finish split Mitchell Neumann – King of the Mountain (fastest uphill) Nick Andrewartha – Most aggressive (fastest downhill) Brooke Pye – Female leader Melanie Neumann – U20 leader Simon Mee – Fastest Long leg Morgan McIntyre – Fastest shortest leg Lee Andrewartha – Closest to the ideal sledger on the day (Kieran Sullivan) Andrew Shipton – Biggest mistake |

Sledge Competition
The Sledge competition will be run during the Australian 3 Days. The Sledge will replace the M21AS class.
The Sledge is open to all, women and men old and young. The distance will be approximately 5.0km each day.
On Day 1 there will be a mass start from the main start location. After that, there will be a start draw prepared for Day 2 starting from slowest to fastest, with the normal 2 minute start interval. The same will occur for Day 3. The Sledge start list will be prepared as soon as possible and displayed, online, at the event, as well as at the event centre in Stanthorpe.
The Sledge is the class where competitors can try to live their dreams, 'what might have been', 'if only', 'I only made one mistake in 1977'. If you want to show that you still have what it takes, then this is the class for you. Do you want to run against your husband or partner (now that he no longer trains and is somewhat overweight)? This is your opportunity to set the record straight.
There will be a special Sledge presentation ceremony each day. There will also be some lucky draw prizes for sledge entrants only. The major awards of coloured running shorts (similar to the Tour de France and which must be worn the following day) cover such categories as, fastest on the final leg, fastest on the shortest leg, fastest downhill, fastest uphill, fastest junior or senior and other categories depending on the mood of the official running the presentations.
To be a part of sledge just select the "Sledge" class for each day of the A3D, on the entry form.
